Stephen Downes pointed out a great article on the use of educational blogging. I highly recommend the read, especially if, like me, you’re still wondering about exactly where blogging fits in the practical instructional landscape.
As I pointed out in my first couple of posts, I’ve been kind of hesitant to really embrace blogging. Not that I think it’s “BAD” or that I don’t particularly enjoy it, but I’m not really seeing that it’s “all-that-and-a-can-of-Cheez-Whiz-too” like like I’ve heard others [the general media?] proclaim it to be. I do see it as a great way to “be heard” (at least I visualize people are listening) and the entry curve is next to zero but I’ve certainly had stronger and much more meaningful interactions in other modalities (a better term escapes me at the minute) such as online chat, via email and on Discussion Boards. Again, I haven’t found blogging to be bad or even a waste of time but I also haven’t seen the interaction and two way communication that I, personally, think is so necessary to a good instructional experience (this is not intended as a slight to the generosity of nklkenny in posting a couple of comments). My experience, thus far, has been that blogging is a very blogger-centric way to communicate where the blogger puts stuff out there – pretty free form – and any comments or discussion around that thought aren’t really facilitated very well. Certainly, as far as a dialogue goes, blogging just isn’t there.
That’s great, Paul, but where are you going with this? Well, on Threaded Discussion Boards, I’ve seen raging dialogue take place. They just feel much more, uh, community-oriented (not the right term but I can’t think of a better description right now). While reading the article above, and I don’t necessarily diagree with them, I feel that maybe we are looking past existing technology and trying to force new, shiny, technology into roles it wasn’t intended to fill. Of course, it could be that I’m still so new to blogging that I haven’t seen the big picture yet…
So, I’ve thrown this idea out there because it’s on my mind and given you some additional information on what I’m thinking and provided some fodder in the form of an article… let’s have a discussion about it… (yes, you could consider that kind of like a double-dog dare 🙂 )

I’ve been a blogger of some sorts for a while, and in some of the mediums I notice that there’s a huge exchange and a good deal of knowledge transfer. But in some cases there is not, maybe it’s the community or the audience. For me and as I’ve posted on my blog somewhere, the blog is mainly a place for me to blurt out my reflections before I actually do something with them. It’s just an added bonus if some people actually add their comments. Just some p-nut gallery thoughts. And once in a while you make a connection or contact at it’s valid. I was able to make some strong connections via my workblog and even some network/friendships that extend outside of my company.
It takes a little while to become part of the blogging community. You might try responding to things like the Learning Circuits Blog monthly the Big Question – the most recent is a good one that is an end-of-year thing.
Take a look back at Sept’s on blogging for learning professionals as well. It will point you to a bunch of different thoughts on this topic. And, there’s some discussion about blogging vs. discussion groups.
It is hit or miss whether you’ll get exchange in the blog world, but to me it offers a better understanding of other people than I get in discussion groups.

The one thing that was intriguing in the article I cited was that the “discussion topic” is dictated specifically by the blogger which will [I assume] give it more relevance for that person. Of course, this depends on the volume of comments that readers make.
Maybe it’s just a matter of changing the mindset from “everyone contributes” (discussion board) to “blogger initiates then everyone contributes”?
This is a test blog for me to see if this works. This is my first blog and I hope that bloggins sticks around.

If Vietnam’s got a heated battle for messaging app dominance, where is the Vietnamese contender? Well, just a few days ago, Zalo released a big update to its mobile messaging app (on Android, iOS and Symbian) and it has been blasting Facebook and Zing Me with marketing. The update has made the app significantly faster, added a VIP microblogging feature, fixed a bunch of bugs that were making the app unstable, and finally added a Retina app icon. I think Vietnam’s finally got a viable product to contest foreign apps like KakaoTalk, WeChat, Line, Whatsapp, and Viber.
To be sure, Zalo isn’t as sophisticated as the others. Some of the stickers aren’t as pretty, and there aren’t any games or mobile payments, but the beta was released last August and the first full release was in November. Give it time.
Just a 30-minute motorbike ride away from District 1, I visited VNG headquarters to meet the Zalo team. There’s a full floor dedicated to the team. After sitting down with Vuong Quang Khai, the project leader, I quickly understood why:
Zalo is a combination of Zing and Alo (Vietnamese for hello on the phone). If you look at all of our VNG branding before, it’s Zing Mp3, Zing Me, Zing Game, etc. we always featured the full word, Zing, as prominent. Zing is associated with web services. So Zalo is a step away from that. In fact, the original name for Zalo was going to be Zing Talk, but we decided to forget that. New all the way. Last year, we decided that “mobile first” was a really important strategy for us moving forward. The mobile market in Vietnam is huge and it is also where Facebook is still entering and not dominant. The name symbolizes the departure from the old and moving powerfully into something new.
The big staff reflects this renewal. In true Apple style, the Zalo team poached team members from other projects like Zing Me to build Zalo.
A lot of our users were asking, why hasn’t Zing Me been updated in awhile? It’s because we moved all our efforts into Zalo.
In a way, you could say Zalo is the new face of VNG. The full Zalo team is about 80 people, with 40 engineers and the business development, marketing, design, and backend support. Khai says that one of the reasons the engineering is so big is dealing with scaling and a dedicated push to mobile. Khai elaborates on what aspect of mobile messaging the Zalo team emphasizes most.
As far as mobile messaging goes, there are three main areas: communication, social, and entertainment. Each app has its strengths. Viber is strong in communication via its free calls and SMS. Line is strong in entertainment, KakaoTalk is strong in social. For Zalo, we want to push communication because we believe that is what is most important to users. Once that is solid, we will move into other features.
It’s only a matter of time, and most likely a very short time, before we start to see games on Zalo. VNG, after all, used to mean “Vina Gaming” and the company has strong roots in the gaming industry. VNG currently has 5 game studios that produce games and some are already testing mobile games like the very successful Skygarden.
As of late January 2013, Zalo has over 500,000 users. Zing Me, VNG’s social media platform, has over 8 million. But Zing Me is targeted at a teen audience, whereas Zalo is looking at a broader market with people between 20 to 30 years old.
In addition to chatting over the mobile network, Zalo also has group chat for specific topics like love, events, and education. Obviously a throwback to the popularity of Vietnamese forums, and not a prominent feature on foreign messaging apps. With a team of Vietnamese designers, the app also features a plethora of Vietnamese-specific stickers. Like WeChat, Zalo also has the ability to search for new friends nearby and and to follow celebrities or friends via microblogging. And of course, there are photos; an app can’t survive in the 21st century without them.
With Zalo’s latest update, it’s foreseeable that the app will become a significant contender in 2013 for the typing thumbs of Vietnamese mobile users.

You’d think that megapublisher Activision would be investing more in mobile game development. After all, everyone says mobile games are the future.
But even as companies like Supercell, GungHo and DeNA making large-scale cash on mobile games, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg says his company is taking a measured approach to the space.
So the question is, with Activision’s resources, and solid proof that a company can bring in very meaningful revenues via mobile, why hasn’t the company tried to really capitalize on the vast mobile game market?
“Currently, we’re primarily using mobile as a way to enhance the experience of our core franchises, not as a new alternate core business for us,” says Hirshberg. “We know what we’re good at. We’re good at making highly immersive, high-production value games that people play for hours and hours.
“Right now, that doesn’t describe the mobile game environment, for the most part. Eg: tai mp3 zing. That’s not an indictment of mobile games, it’s simply a description of whether or not it’s the right place for us to focus our primary energies.”
Activision’s primary energies are spent on retail-centric, big-budget games that take years to complete, require tens of millions of marketing and development dollars, and lend themselves to franchise-ability. Activision is in the empire business, and that business happens mainly on game consoles and PC.
The few games that Activision has brought to mobiles have been strong entries, but it’s hard to imagine they move the needle at company that makes hundreds of millions of dollars with franchises like Skylanders and Call of Duty. On mobile, games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Zombies, Skylanders Lost Island and a Pitfall remake did well for Activision, but certainly aren’t the kind of breadwinners like Supercell’s Hay Day or GungHo’s Puzzle & Dragons.
Those mobile game companies in particular make ridiculous amounts of money: Supercell reportedly was making $2.4 million per day off of two games as of April this year. GungHo was reportedly making $3.76 million per day off of just one game as of May. Electronic Arts has been making sure to invest more heavily in mobile, and has seen some success as well, most recently with The Simpsons: Tapped Out.
Hirshberg says “of course” Activision is keeping a close eye on those large-scale success stories. But those success stories are rare. “I’m glad to see companies have success at a larger scale in that environment,” he says. “A couple years ago, that wasn’t happening.
“At the same time, the percentage of companies capable of achieving that scale is very low in that business. And even more so, the percentage of companies that are able to create any kind of franchise effect is even lower — meaning the top hits tend to rotate out every couple of months in that world. Even of] huge hits like Angry Birds are now in different businesses, like franchising.”
For Activision, and other large game companies with roots in retail, the focus for now will remain on long-term franchises that players can attach themselves to for years.
Even though Activision has thrown relatively little investment toward mobile games, Hirshberg admits, “You can’t deny the size of the installed base. There are a lot of these devices out there.”
